Experience & Expertise

Our coaches have both experience and expertise because they have been through it all before and come out on top. They know what it takes to succeed in this sport and are the best individuals to convey that knowledge to aspiring track and field athletes. That, coupled with their commitment to the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) philosophy of training the whole athlete, are what develops our athletes as competitors and people.

Our Coaches

BILL STEPHENS, Head Coach, Middle Distance

NCCP: 119147

  • With over 40 years of superior coaching experience, Bill has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of athletes. He served on the Athletics Ontario Board for 12 years, 5 of which were in the role of President. He currently serves as the Athletics Ontario Quest for Gold committee member and Chair and is on the Awards Banquet committee. 


Additional accolades:

- NCCP Level 2 Competition Development

- Retired high school teacher and coach with the TDSB for 32 years

- Specialties include: 400, 800, 1500, 3000 metres and Cross Country


Bill’s athletes and teams have won numerous OFSAA, Athletics Ontario, and National titles including OFSAA Team awards, Canadian Track Champions, and has coached many athletes to the International Competition level. Bill’s scouting and coaching abilities have brought many talented, dedicated people into the sport.

    ARREN YOUNG, Horizontal Jumps

    National Medalist at Junior, Collegiate, and Senior Championships

    DDSB Secondary Teacher

    A horizontal jumps coach-athlete with more than a decade of coaching experience. Arren has coached athletes in and around the Scarborough community to high school and international successes. With a strong commitment to improvement, Arren focuses on the understanding, as well as the physical demands of the sport.


    RUDY SYLVAN, Horizontal Jumps & Sprints

    NCCP Level 2

    2000 Olympian, 400 metres (for Grenada)

    1998 Canadian Junior Team

    2001 Canada Summer Games, Team Ontario Captain

    2002 Canada NACAC Team Selection

    Former NCAA Division 1 student-athlete at University of Memphis, Tennessee. Rudy has over 20 years of experience coaching horizontal jumps and sprints, helping numerous athletes achieve athletic scholarships. Most recently, Mikeisha Welcome's bronze-medal finish at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championship in San Jose, Costa Rica. He has also been on the coaching staff of Birchmount Park C.I. for multiple OFSAA Championships. Rudy specializes in horizontal jumps, 100-400 metres, and relays.


    BRITTNEY GIBBS, Horizontal Jumps

    National Medalist at Junior, Collegiate, and Senior Championships

    Mental Training Consultant

    Former NCAA Division 1 student-athlete at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville, Illinois. She has a master's degree in Exercise and Sport Physiology, which allows her to focus on the mental aspect of sport with her athletes. As a recent university graduate, Brittney is passionate about using her past athletic experiences to mentor upcoming athletes in their pursuit of success.


    ODON MAKWENE, Horizontal Jumps & Sprints

    NCCP: 6164998

    5-time Canadian Senior Long Jump Champion

    Ontario Provincial Champion, OFSAA Finalist

    Massage Therapy and Sports Nutrition Certified

    Odon studied Kinesiology at York University. Specializing in the horizontal jumps (long jump, triple jump), as well as sprints from the 60m to the 400m, Odon has guided athletes to OFSAA to top-3 and top-12 performances in both jumps and sprints.


    FABIAN HAYLES, Junior Development


    7-time NJCAA All-American

    2-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Conference

    4-time ICAAAA top-8 finisher

    Fabian is the club's Junior Development coach, working with athletes ages 8-12.

    Former NCAA Division 1 student-athlete at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, with a degree in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science.

    A Phoenix Athletics alumnus of 11 years, Fabian was coached by head coach, Bill Stephens up until 2021. His coaching journey started during the 2018 cross-country season as a coach-athlete, coaching alongside Bill while training at the same time. Fabian uses his past experiences in Division 1 athletics to mentor young athletes, while helping them navigate various avenues of post-secondary athletic opportunities. He has a strong commitment to focus on each athlete's individual strengths and weaknesses and develop workouts to benefit each athlete. Fabian specializes in coaching 200-800 metres.
